Student Data Stolen from Millions

Data has been stolen from millions of current and former students who took standardized testing through Educational Testing Service (ETS), in the state of California. A recent article said that 5.7 million students are enrolled in the state’s public schools, but the attack reached even more as it accessed information from students as far back as 2006.

Early October, investigators discovered that a login credential had been stolen earlier this year. Several times since May, an unauthorized user was found to access and copy the student information files.

Experts have pointed out that this attack reveals a serious weakness in the way student data is being stored. They ask why one stolen credential could lead to an attack of this size, and how existing security measures failed to back up the credential when compromised.

An ETS spokesperson stated that stronger security methods are going into effect and will be explored further.
