A recent cyberattack on Nevada’s systems warns all state and local government to implement cybersecurity measures. An article from CBS News points out that in the past year hackers have started targeting smaller government systems, finding more success in that area.
The article states, “An analysis from the software company Comparitech counts 525 ransomware attacks on U.S. government entities since 2018, with an estimated $1.09 billion lost to downtime as a result of those attacks.”
In August the Nevada government network was compromised, causing disruption to many state operations and essential services. All state offices remained closed to in-person services for some time, as the state was unable to bring services back online safely.
From the University of Nevada, a professor of information systems warns that other states and cities need to be aware of these attacks, in order to prevent similar breaches.
