Earlier this year, Change Healthcare’s IT systems were hacked. Change Healthcare is a company, based in Tennessee, which connects patients to their providers while managing payments and revenue cycle. This organization is linked with many companies and pharmacy chains, two of these being CVS and Walgreens.
Although the company immediately disconnected their systems from their partners as soon as they realised the threat, the effects were still noticed in many locations across the country.
Following this attack, CVS had complications trying to process insurance claims and Walgreens stated that some of their prescriptions could possibly be affected. Warning of disruption was given by GoodRX, BlueCross Blue Shield, and multiple independent pharmacies.
Cyberattack directed at the healthcare industry is especially dangerous as healthcare is an essential service. For Change Healthcare in particular, the risk is significant because they are responsible for a great number of collaborations by linking patients, insurance companies, healthcare providers, and pharmacies. This amount of vulnerability created an impact that is “nationwide” as stated by Public Supermarkets.
